What Causes TMJ Disorders And How Are They Treated?

Causes And Treatments of TMJ

While in most cases the causes for TMJ disorders are not clear, there are some reasons why they happen. It’s just important to note that disorders related to the TMJ involve the hinge action with sliding motion of the joint. And as far as the appropriate treatment goes, it largely depends on the cause. Here are some known causes of the disorder and the treatment options.

The TMJ consists of parts of the bones covered in cartilage that interact in the joint, and in between them is a small shock-absorbing disk that keeps the sliding motion smooth. For painful TMJ disorders, the causes may include erosion of the disk or that there is misalignment between joint and bone, arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis might have damaged the cartilage, and if trauma or injury impacted the joint.

Sometimes stress can disengage the alignment. This refers to the pressures exerted by teeth grinding or clenching. A dental treatment, an infection of the connective tissue, or an autoimmune disease may also result in misalignment.

What are the treatments for TMJ disorders?

Most of these problems are temporary, lasting a few weeks to a few months. It can resolve on its own, however, patients may take over-the-counter medicines or apply cold or hot compress to the area if there are symptoms.

Your dentist may prescribe gentle jaw stretching and relaxation exercises. Also, if necessary, a bite plate or a nightguard can be used to stabilize the jaw. If clicking sounds or grating sensations are felt, but no experience of pain or hampered movement, no treatment may be necessary. It’s important that, as much as possible, reversible treatments such as these mentioned should be employed that will not cause any permanent damage to the bite or the jaw alignment.

Examples of treatment options that are considered irreversible or permanent are: extensive dental work, grinding the teeth to adjust the bite, using a mandibular repositioning splint, as well as orthodontics and surgical procedures. A team of specialists may be necessary for a select group of patients with complex TMJ issues that are chronic and severe.
