The Reasons Why Your Gums May Be Receding

Multiple Factors of Gum Recession

Receding gums is a symptom of an underlying condition, called periodontitis. There are several causes that make your gums recede from their original position. It can range from simple neglect, to bad habits, to family history. Experts say that three out of four adults have some form of periodontal disease, and this includes receding gums.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis starts from simple gingivitis where the gums swell, change in color from healthy pink to bright red or reddish purple, and can sometimes bleed when brushing or flossing. Over time, plaque build-up causes bacterial infection that can overcome the gum tissue causing it to pull away from teeth surfaces and develop pockets of more bacteria. It may look like to you that your teeth are elongating, but it’s actually your gums that are pulling back, exposing even the roots.Several causes and risk factors are attributed to receding gums.

Possible Causes of Receding Gums

Receding gums are usually caused by build-up of plaque, a consequence of poor oral hygiene; meaning, proper and regular brushing and flossing are deficient. Another cause is aggressive brushing over the long term. Hard brushing irritates the gums especially those hugging the teeth, causing them to swell and puff; this situation invites more bacterial attack. Smoking is a bad habit that expands plaque development, loss of bone, and restricts blood flow to your gums.

Certain medical conditions can lead to receding gums. For example, hormonal changes during pregnancy, diabetes, and HIV can cause gums to be vulnerable to infection. A family history of gum disease is also a strong indicator that you can have periodontitis.

Some medications can cause dry mouth, which invites more bacteria. If there is inadequacy of saliva that hydrates the mouth, you are more prone to injuries and infections that target the gums.

Symptoms of Receding Gums

Apart from receding gums, redness and swelling and bleeding of gums, other symptoms accompany this stage of periodontitis. There may be bad breath, pain at the gum line, and loose teeth in the sockets.
