Easy Reminders for Adults to Enjoy Good Oral Health

Every Adult’s Tips To Live By

Do you want to know some easy, helpful tips to get into good oral health shape and keep it that way well into your later adult years? Here are tips to live by.

Fluoride is good for your teeth. Have it in your water and in your toothpaste. Drink fluoridated water and brush with fluoride toothpaste.

The practice of good oral hygiene maintains the health of your teeth. Brush teeth twice daily and floss at least once daily to remove dental plaque.

Regular dentist visits are essential. Visit your dentist at least every 6 months, regardless if you have few or no natural teeth left or if you wear dentures.

Smoking is bad for your teeth and overall health. Do not use any tobacco products. If you do smoke, quit.

Limit or moderate alcoholic drinks. Excessive alcohol consumption is detrimental to oral health. Not only does it cause staining of teeth, it can also lead to dry mouth, making you more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay.

If you have diabetes, work on managing your condition. People with poorly controlled diabetes are at greater risk for dental problems. Conditions like dry mouth and gum disease are fairly common among those who are diabetic and with poor oral hygiene. Also consider that treating gum disease may help lower your blood sugar level.

If you are taking medications for some health problems, note if any of them causes dry mouth, a condition that can make you more susceptible to cavities. Ask your doctor if you can shift to other medicines, and if you have to stick to the prescription, hydrate your mouth regularly by drinking plenty of water, chewing sugarless gum, and avoiding tobacco products and alcohol.

See your doctor or a dentist if you have sudden changes in taste and smell.
